Flask vs. Django: Which Python Framework Is Better for Your Web Development?

Written by Wojciech Semik | May 31, 2019 1:38:00 PM

Choosing your web framework is just as important as choosing your programming language.

Making the right decision will help you kick off faster, limit web development costs, and scale more smoothly once you acquire more users. On the other hand, the wrong framework could make developing your product a drawn-out, costly, frustrating experience.

We’ll assume you’ve already made what is usually the right choice to build your next software project in Python, but the question remains: which Python framework should you go with?

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the two most popular open-source Python web frameworks: Django and Flask.

How you use these technologies depends greatly on your individual needs. Do you plan on starting off small, then scaling up quickly? Are you under pressure to release your product to market fast? Is stability or experimentation more relevant to you?

All of these and more play a key role in picking your framework. If you’re looking for a rule of thumb, Django is better most of the time, but that doesn’t mean Flask can’t work better sometimes, too.

Just to be clear, the goal of this article is not to give you a one-size-fits-all solution to all your problems. Rather, we’ll tell you where and when you should use Django or Flask.

We’re also going to focus on the business aspects of using these two frameworks, while giving you just enough technical details to make better business decisions.
